Em apoio contínuo aos esforços de Moçambique para combater a COVID-19, o Governo dos E.U.A. doou 1,3 milhões de doses da vacina Pfizer COVID-19 nos dias 29 e 30 de Agosto, estando prevista a chegada de mais 3,5 milhões de doses nas próximas semanas. Estas doses apoiam o objectivo do Governo de Moçambique de começar a vacinar cerca de 5 milhões de moçambicanos com idades compreendidas entre os 12 e os 17 anos. Isto marca uma expansão significativa no esforço de Mocambique no combate à COVID-19, alargando a protecção dos adultos aos adolescentes. De importância crítica para assegurar a preservação segura destas vacinas, a UNICEF e o Governo da Alemanha apoiaram o Ministério da Saúde, através da COVAX, a estabelecer a capacidade da cadeia de ultra-frio necessária no país. Apoio adicional veio da Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) para a entrega das seringas necessárias.
Com esta entrega, o Governo dos E.U.A. doou até agora mais de 5,8 milhões de doses de vacinas COVID-19 a Moçambique. Estas doações fazem parte de um esforço coordenado pelo Governo dos E.U.A. para apoiar a resposta de Moçambique à COVID-19 e reforçar a resiliência do país ao vírus e às suas variantes. A parceria de longa data E.U.A.- Moçambique no sector da saúde resultou numa resposta eficaz à pandemia.
Durante uma cerimónia que marcou a chegada destas vacinas, o Embaixador dos E.U.A. em Moçambique, Peter H. Vrooman, disse: “Os Estados Unidos estão honrados por serem um forte parceiro de Moçambique no sector da saúde há décadas. Estamos empenhados em fazer tudo o que estiver ao nosso alcance para ajudar Moçambique a atingir altas taxas de vacinação em toda a sua população. Por causa de demonstrações de solidariedade, mostramos grande resiliência contra esse vírus”.
Os Estados Unidos estão empenhados em liderar a resposta global da COVID-19, tendo afectado mais de 19 mil milhões de dólares em assistência sanitária, humanitária e económica, tornando-se o maior doador para o esforço global de vacinação de pessoas em todo o mundo. O Governo dos E.U.A. também comprou mais de 1,2 mil milhões de vacinas para países de baixo rendimento e doou 600 milhões de vacinas do próprio fornecimento dos Estados Unidos.
Em estreita colaboração com o Governo da República de Moçambique, o Governo dos E.U.A. fornece mais de 500 milhões de dólares em assistência anual para melhorar a qualidade da educação e dos cuidados de saúde, promover a prosperidade económica e apoiar o desenvolvimento global da nação.
