O Governo dos Estados Unidos, através da sua Agência para o Desenvolvimento Internacional (USAID), anuncia o programa de Reforço da Capacidade da USAID para a Malária (MCAPS), uma iniciativa de cinco anos para melhorar a qualidade dos serviços contra a malária em Moçambique. É uma parte da Iniciativa do Presidente dos Estados Unidos contra a Malária (PMI), visando eliminar esta doença.
Moçambique fez progressos consideráveis para reduzir as mortes por malária, de 970 em 2018 para 408 em 2021. Ainda assim, Moçambique é um dos seis países responsáveis por mais de metade de todos os casos globais de malária. Cerca de 30% de todas as mortes em Moçambique são devidas à malária. As taxas de malária nas províncias de Nampula, Zambézia, e Manica estão entre as mais altas do país.
O programa MCAPS será implementado pela MCD Global Health naquelas províncias, com os seguintes parceiros de consórcio: Comité para Saúde de Moçambique, Fundação Ariel, Fundação para o Desenvolvimento da Comunidade, Family Health International 360, e o Malaria Consortium. Este consórcio trabalhará em estreita parceria com o Programa Nacional de Controlo da Malária do Ministério da Saúde a nível nacional, provincial e distrital, bem como com as unidades de saúde do Ministério da Saúde, trabalhadores da saúde comunitária, comités de gestão da saúde, comunidades, entre outros.
Em conjunto, o consórcio PMI MCAPS trabalhará em conjunto com as unidades de saúde e lhes dará apoio para fornecer serviços de saúde de melhor qualidade contra a malária, melhorando também a saúde e o bem-estar dos moçambicanos. Isto incluirá não só formação e orientação de profissionais de saúde, mas também actividades como a actualização das directrizes e políticas nacionais, bem como a melhoria dos sistemas de recolha e utilização de dados sobre a malária nos distritos e unidades sanitárias das províncias de Nampula, Zambézia e Manica.
A USAID vai investir mais de 29,9 milhões de dólares no PMI ao longo dos próximos cinco anos. O Governo dos Estados Unidos continua empenhado em apoiar o povo de Moçambique no combate à malária e outras doenças. Em estreita colaboração com o Governo de Moçambique, o Governo dos E.U.A. fornece mais de 500 milhões de dólares em assistência anual para ajudar Moçambique a construir um país mais saudável, mais seguro, mais democrático, e mais próspero para todos os cidadãos.
