Há dois anos, o casal decidiu apostar num projecto filantrópico denominado ‘Vets on the road’, com o objectivo de combater a raiva por meio da vacinação e esterilização de animais. Joyce Antunes explica que o mais importante é a vacinação. Para ela, é preciso ter, no mínimo, 75% da população canina vacinada para controlar a raiva. “Infelizmente, estamos muito longe deste número”, lamenta. E acrescenta: “Hoje, quando se tem uma campanha de vacinação, já que existem muitos cães se reproduzindo, seis meses depois a população mudou completamente. O nosso trabalho é mostrar à população as vantagens de ter um cão esterilizado, porque o cão não sai de casa à procura de uma fémea e protege mais a casa, passando a ser um companheiro melhor e facilitando todos os cuidados em termos de saúde”.
Segundo o veterinário Pedro Antunes, as técnicas cirúrgicas usadas há alguns anos nas campanhas de esterilização eram convencionais. Na ‘Vets on the road’, enfatizou, “a técnica cirúrgica usada é minimamente evasiva e o risco de cirurgia é muito baixo, razão pela qual os cães recuperam depressa”.
O casal pretende, através deste projecto, construir um hospital estudantil para albergar um centro de treinamento específico para cirurgias e execução de campanhas. “A nossa ideia é fazer com que a ‘Vets on the road’ abranja todo o território nacional. A nossa visão é ter e formar equipas em todo o país, mas para isso precisamos de apoios porque o investimento é muito alto”, explica Joyce Antunes.
