A empresa moçambicana de logística Mozambique STT e o grupo estatal chinês PowerChina Hubei Engineering Co. Ltd. assinaram este mês um acordo no valor de US$324 milhões para a construção de um porto de águas profundas.
Os trabalhos do porto de Chongoene, na província de Gaza, no sul de Moçambique, deverão começar em Janeiro, após a conclusão de estudos de engenharia e de impacto ambiental. O projecto deve estar concluído em Junho de 2025.
Segundo a agência noticiosa estatal moçambicana AIM, a principal missão do porto será escoar minério, tendo capacidade para processar 150 milhões de toneladas de carga por ano.
O porto será um componente essencial do Corredor de Desenvolvimento de Chongoene, um projecto no valor de US$700 milhões, que irá incluir uma linha de caminhos-de-ferro com 221 quilómetros até Chicualacuala, na fronteira com o Zimbabué, e uma outra linha até à província de Inhambane.
